Not a bad idea at all, but I think the big question is whether this actually fixes anything long-term.
Right now we don’t really know what the core issue is between Nabi and Toribash. Funding is obviously a factor in keeping servers running and development alive, but is it the factor? If the main problem is lack of dev time, motivation, or manpower, then community fund-raising could easily just turn into a short-term patch that leads nowhere.
Special items for USD could work, but Toribash players are collectors by nature. If an item ends up widely owned, it loses a lot of its appeal. For that to succeed, it would probably need to be extremely limited, clearly exclusive, and tied to some kind of legacy or history, otherwise it’s just another item that floods inventories.
As for events funded by clans or wealthier players: do you mean TC/item events, or actual USD prize pools? We already see the latter occasionally in larger community events (like Kane’s EO series), where players donate USD. Those are great, but they tend to support the competitive scene more than Nabi directly unless there’s a clear system in place.
One idea that might be more sustainable is offering things the community can’t normally create themselves:
Truly limited, one-off legacy items tied to Toribash milestones. (pretty easy to do this considering the amount of item forgers we have)
Paid cosmetic/forum features. (as you suggested)
Officially endorsed community events where part of the entry or sponsorship clearly supports Nabi, with transparency on where it goes. (maybe the best bet imo)
I think collaboration is the right direction, but without clarity on what Toribash actually needs right now, throwing money at the problem risks missing the mark. Transparency and a clear goal would make any of these ideas far more effective.
